Under the Machinery Directive, CE marking is not applicable to ordinary ladders, stepladders and scaffolding in Europe. These products are not among those for which CE marking is required or permitted. Instead, specific European standards (EN) govern their design and construction. The Machinery Directive does not regulate these types of ladders and scaffolding. CE marking applies to certain lifting equipment, such as lifts, aerial work platforms and electrically or manually powered lifting platforms, goods lifts and other machinery within its scope.
